Midsummer in the archipelago
Midsummer's day is a very special day in Sweden. The climax of summer. Everyone is free, celebrating the warmth and light. The long winter is far away. Love is in the air.
If you have a summer house by the water, you and your friends are there. Sun bathing and swimming. Eating and drinking. Falling and laughing.
But if you come from the mountains up north, you try to find someone who wants your company for a couple of lazy, hazy, crazy days. As my friends Lars, Jonas and I did.
Her name was Erika. Her grandmother came from an island in the Stockholm archipelago called Runmarö. The island of August Strindberg. Her house was very small, so we had to share beds. I got to share the one with Erika.
Next summer, me and Erika married. This year we had our son. August.
I still wear my lucky vintage Fred Perry tennis shorts. Every midsummer's day.
